Do you need my cylinder heads?

Yes – And because our CNC programming is done in house we use your heads instead of exchanging them.
Cylinder work is also done on your existing cylinders unless you are purchasing a Nikasil Kit.

How long is the turnaround on cylinder heads and kits?

This depends on the time of year and workload. Typical turnaround is two weeks but during our busiest season it can be 4 to 5 weeks. Feel free to call and we will tell you our current schedule.

What tuning system do you suggest?

We prefer TTS Mastertune or Power Commander Vision. That said, it is best to determine who is going to tune the bike and which system they are most comfortable with and prefer. The tune is one of the most crucial parts of the build.

How about self-tuning modules?

Self-tuning modules like the Thundermax are good. They typically get you started with a base map that is close, especially in the cruising range. Because that map most likely will not be as close in acceleration and other points, a complete tune is still necessary.

What Cam do I want?

We find that most people are over camming their bike. The best cam selection is one that fits the compression of the bike and riding style. We are happy to discuss cam selection with you to make sure you get the one that will work best for the way you ride.

What is the best way to break in a new motor?

We use petroleum based oil for the first 1000 miles (instead of synthetic). We heat sync the motor 10 to 12 times for 3 to 40 seconds which slowly adds heat to the rings (this is not revving the engine – rather just starting and idling). The first 50 miles on the bike are crucial and we do 3 or 4 rides of 10 to 15 miles not exceeding 2500 rpm. We then have the customer ride another 200 miles under 3000 rpm before the bike has the final dyno tune.

Can I run pump gas?

The simple answer is yes. All of our kits are designed to run on pump gas. Major determinants are cam selection and tuning.

Do I need to change my Gear Ratio and what should I run?

It is our opinion that gear ratio changes are necessary on many existing bikes, particularly FL models. We feel that the gear ratio that works best is a 3.00 to a 3.05.

What do Flow numbers mean?

Flow numbers are based on the amount of air that flows through the intake or exhaust port at a particular lift. Remember that these numbers are not always comparable. Flow numbers will vary dependent on the method used – for example, if the air is flowed directly though the head or using a backing plate and throttle body as we do.

Will performance kits effect my gas mileage?

Performance kits will not vary gas mileage economy much at all, especially in the cruising range. However, if the bike is driven more aggressively, the MPGs will decrease per tank.

Will performance kits produce more heat?

Heat issues normally occur due to an improper tune. late model motorcycles, however, are air cooled so if stuck in traffic (or at Bikeweek) a performance motor’s temperature will rise quicker. Remember – if not moving, it is not cooling.

Do I need to only use T-Man components?

No, our heads are designed to work with other manufacturer’s components. That said, all of our research and design is based on T-Man components making it easier for us to help you get the most out of your ride.

What is Wet Sumping?

Wet sumping is an abundance of oil left in the bottom end. This creates drag on the flywheels which decreases horsepower and torque immensely. The two most likely causes are: 1) A bad scavenging oil pump or 2) a bad ring seal causing too much pressure in the bottom end. At T-Man we don’t like to see more than 3 ½ to 4 ounces in the bottom end.
